INTRODUCING - AMBER RUN

$

image

Quickly establishing themselves as one of the most promising new guitar acts around, Nottingham five-piece Amber Run stand at the forefront of a wave of excitingly accessible young British talent.

With powerful, emotional numbers like new single Spark serving as an impressive intro to the band, they’ll be looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Kodaline and The 1975 in winning the UK round to their sound. Going by early tips from the likes of Fearne Cotton and Zane Lowe, they’re already halfway there.

But who better to introduce the band than themselves? We dropped them a few quick-fire questions and asked them to come up with a selection of some of their favourite music, which you can hear in the band’s Chosen By station below.

image

So, for those who are new to the world of Amber Run – how did the band start out together?

Tom, Joe and myself (Will) have known each other for years. When we went to uni we formed the band with Henry and Felix. Felix was a friend of a friend and Henry lived next to Tom in halls. It’s all quite funny really - Tom’s first time playing bass was when we recorded our first single ‘Noah’, and Henry first met Felix while loading in at our first show. It goes to show we’re really best mates before anything else.

Can you sum up your sound in three words?

Anthemic, cinematic music.

Many people have commented on how emotional your tracks are – do you find that makes them quite liberating to sing?

Some of the unreleased tracks are such a joy to play every night for that reason. There’s a song called ‘See You Soon’ that we play which is about leaving people behind when you go on tour, and I think we all feel that one most when we play it live. ‘Spark’ is so optimistic as well, we always love playing it to people; it’s great. It’s important to convey the emotion behind the songs live, as it’s one of the most important aspects of our music and something that we hope will bring people to us.

If you could only pick one band that you’d hold up as your ‘key’ influence growing up, who would you pick?

This is always a hard question as our influences are so all over the place. We’d all have different answers. Joe would say Coldplay for the songwriting and emotion, Felix would say Pearl Jam as he loves his grunge. Tom wants me to say The Pet Shop Boys - I think his Dad listened to them a lot… Henry loves Arctic Monkeys, I love This Will Destroy You and post rock. It’s all there in the mix. I realise I’ve completely missed the whole ‘one band’ aspect of this question but there isn’t just one!

How did it feel when you guys first signed to Sony? Did you feel you could relax a little, or did it make you want to prove yourselves even more?

It felt f***ing amazing of course - despite what cynics might say it is a dream come true signing to a major label. It’s just the reassurance that you’re given in knowing that you can make being in a band your living. But it is hard work, and we knew it would be. I remember coming off stage at Reading and our production manager/secret ingredient Ben said to me, “you think this is hard work now? Wait til you get signed mate”. There’s a lot more pressure but it’s good and we thrive under it - we have massive ambitions and I think the label love that.

What does the rest of 2014 have in store for Amber Run?

Lots more show - loads of shows. We love playing shows but considering where we are we’ve played considerably less than others, so we want to get them under our belt. Festivals in summer - Isle of Wight being a big one at the moment, and then our album release later in the year. We can’t wait for that - there’s songs in there that might make people double check that they’re actually listening to the same band… in a good way I hope.

BRAND NEW & BRILLIANT THIS WEEK

This week it’s all about the ladies as three of our favourite pop acts of the moment duke it out. There’s something new in the form of Nottingham songstress Indiana, the long-awaited return of Lily Allen, plus girl-group Neon Jungle. Get your fill of all these and more in our Brand New & Brilliant station, updated weekly with the hottest hits around.

image

Indiana – Solo Dancing

image

We’re chuffed to see Indiana doing so well this week, having championed her back in February as part of our Next Big Thing series. Solo Dancing is a gem of a track, all sultry vocals and bewitching electronics that feel like something off of the Blade Runner soundtrack. Magical stuff.

Neon Jungle – Welcome To The Jungle

image

The hits just keep coming with Neon Jungle, with new single Welcome to the Jungle reaffirming why they’re totally our favourite pop group around right now. Sticking to the all-out club banger template of Trouble and Braveheart, their latest number delivers more fizzy, ridiculously catchy fun with a feisty, empowering kick in the tail.

Lily Allen – Our Time

image

She’s been away for quite some time, but new single Our Time is like classic Lily all over again. Expect cheeky lyrics aplenty atop a breezy flow of cheap synths and an ace chorus. If Skins was still on the telly, this could have been the perfect theme tune.

KELIS: FURTHER LISTENING

Here’s what’s cooking! Kelis serves up her new album ‘Food’ this week, returning to R&B with her retro soul-influenced flavours.

The singer’s fetish with food has been stewing for some time since the release of standout album ‘Tasty’ and hit single ‘Milkshake’ back in 2003, and now more recently she has piloted her own cooking show ‘Saucy & Sweet’, and even announced the launch of her range of specialist sauces.

Outside of the kitchen, Kelis’s musical repertoire is equally impressive. A career spanning over 10 years has seen the artist cover a lot of ground, from R&B hits to EDM produced by David Guetta. It seems she has a taste for it all.

We’ve put together a station full of the superstar’s most popular tracks from old to new, contemporaries though the years and inspirations. Tuck into the station below!

NEXT BIG THING - MARMOZETS / LUCIUS / HOZIER

It’s not long until festival season properly kicks off, so why not help welcome in the summer with some brilliant new music? Longtime fans of our Next Big Thing station will know we’ve watched the likes of Nick Mulvey, Indiana and SOHN go from hotly-tipped indie faves to bonafide chart successes – but if you’re new to the station, why not tune in today? You might just discover your new favourite band…

image

Marmozets

image

A female-fronted Royal Blood. The UK’s answer to Paramore. The next Pretty Reckless. Call them what you will, but the most important thing about newcomers Marmozets is that they’re really, really good. Fiery vocals and massive guitar riffs trade places on tracks like Move Shake Hide and Why Do You Hate Me, proving early praise from the likes of Kerrang! and Radio 1 is more than justified.

Lucius

image

The latest budding young indie troupe to have the music press bending over backward to sing their praises, this Brooklyn five-piece offer up cheerily minimalist guitar numbers; all twinkling melodies and dreamy vocals. Strikingly pretty stuff.

Hozier

image

Irish 24 year old Hozier, aka Andrew Hozier-Byrne is about as soulful as they come; with a deeply resonant, powerful voice dominating on standout tracks like the gospel-tinged Take Me To Church. With his music going viral late last year and rapid local success quickly following, expect Hozier to hit our shores in a big way over the next few months.

EMBRACE - CHOSEN BY

Embrace are no strangers to staging a comeback. In 2004, two years after being dropped by their label, they rode a wave of success off the back of Chris Martin-penned single Gravity; scoring two Number One albums in the process and re-instating themselves as one of Britain’s top rock acts.

Following their official 2006 World Cup anthem World At Our Feet however, the band took an extended hiatus, one year away from the spotlight turning into eight. Now signed to Cooking Vinyl however, and on the verge of releasing their sixth album, Embrace are back – refuelled and revitalised, with their new material already courting rave reviews.

With the album marking a distinct shift toward more electronic influences, we caught up with Embrace to quiz them on what we can expect from the record and how things have changed since their last outing. For a deeper insight into their influences, be sure to check out their handpicked Chosen By station too – featuring a selection of their favourite songs.

image

Many of the reviews of your new material have commented on the shift in style – was it a conscious decision to move away from your earlier sound, or something that emerged naturally?

It was a conscious decision to move forward and do something different but still retain what was great about Embrace. The new sound has definitely got a much darker edge with influences coming from bands like Joy Division and New Order. The music has more depth and scope to it but keeps the strong melodies, lyrics and big choruses. Everyone that liked us before will definitely get it and hopefully it’ll spread to a whole new audience.

The music industry has changed a great deal since your last album in 2006 – do you think it’s heading in a better direction, or does the current musical climate worry you?

I work with a lot of young bands in Yorkshire and the amount of young talent coming up is astonishing, which bodes well for the future. The industry has changed a lot but not necessarily in a bad way. There isn’t the same money slushing around that there used to be but I think this helps bands to focus on every detail of what they do more and not become complacent. It’s all about working out how to make what’s new work for you and not continually complaining that it isn’t like it used to be.

If you had to pick one of your singles that you’ve always been particularly proud of, which would it be, and why?

I think it would be Ashes as it was the track that epitomised our comeback with Out of Nothing. We’d been dropped then re-signed and worked on the album for three years until we’d spent everything we had and this was our rise from the ashes.

You’re signed to Cooking Vinyl now – what would you say are the key things you were looking to get out of an independent deal as a band?

The main thing was getting a deal that was both fair to us and the label. If you have that then you’ll both work your arses off to get the band as far as it can go. So far Cooking Vinyl are keeping their end of the bargain, so we’re very happy.

It’s the 20th anniversary of Britpop this year – do you have fond memories of the era and did you ever consider Embrace part of the ‘Britpop movement’?

I never really considered us part of Britpop as we didn’t come out until the tail end of it. We always protested that we were nothing like Oasis, but in hindsight there maybe a little bit of influence on a couple of the songs on the first album!

Can you feel it coming? Festival season is on the horizon, and to tell you the truth, we can’t wait. If you feel the same, why not whet your appetite for a summer of great live music with some of our favourite new songs of the moment. Just tune in to our Brand New & Brilliant station for all of the below and more!

Calvin Harris – Summer

image

Everyone’s favourite producer of the moment returns, primed with his characteristic brand of pumped-up dance banger. Summer certainly pushes all the right buttons; let’s hope the actual British summer – and Calvin’s new album – is up to scratch too.

Bastille – Bad Blood

image

For many, this was the track that first introduced them to Bastille, all the way back in 2012. Now issued with a timely re-release, it reinforces their knack for penning winningly catchy indie-pop gems. For our money, one of their best songs.

The 1975 – Robbers

image

From one indie pop troupe pumping their album for all it’s worth to another. The 6th single to be taken from their debut album, Robbers sees normally-chirpy The 1975 take a more reflective note for this dreamy, 80s-flavoured guitar ballad.

The Dutch rapper turned singer scored his first UK number one single this Sunday with ‘Waves’. The artist is one of many Dutch acts to top the UK singles chart, following in the footsteps of Bingo Players, Martin Garrix and Nicky Romero. He might be a star back home, but over here he’s relatively unknown, so we’ve done some digging and put together 5 facts about the man behind the smash hit.

1) Mr Probz began his music career rapping and making hip hop; surprisingly he’s relatively new to singing.

2)‘Waves’ was intended  as a promo song and didn’t even make the album he was working on at the time.

3) The original version of the single was released in Holland last year, charting at number 3, along with the album , ‘The Treatment’ that was available to stream for free.

4) Dennis aka Mr Probz has already had a number 1 hit (albeit on the FunX Hip Hop Chart in Holland) with ‘Meisje luister’, a collaboration with Kleine Viezerik, which has had almost 6.5 million views on Youtube.

5) An inspirational quote from the man himself: ‘If you always aim higher than your goals there’s a big chance you’ll hit something sooner or later’. Maybe this is the key to chart success?

She’s the hottest new female talent to come out of the UK’s pop scene and today Louisa Rose Allen releases her single ‘Holding Onto Heaven’ off the back of her new album ‘Glorious’. Fresh from winning a Grammy earlier this year with her EDM smash collaboration with Zedd, she’s already a household name in the US. This side of the Atlantic however she remains relatively under the radar despite having a top 10 hit in February. Fun & full of energy, Foxes (the name has something to do with a bizarre dream her mum had) has explored various musical avenues working with other artists such as Fall Out Boy and Rudimental but is now ready and determined to achieve success with her own solo material.

We caught up with Foxes ahead of her release where she introduces some of her favourite songs, talks about her inspirations both past and present and a particular ‘scary’ sight!

Music boffins reveal equation for Eurovision success

All set for the big Eurovision Song Contest final in Copenhagen on Saturday? We certainly are!

If you need a quick reminder of this year’s entries, just tune into our Eurovision station below to hear them all, including the UK’s very own entry; ‘Children of the Universe’ by Molly Smitten-Downes.

As we count down the hours until it all kicks off though, we thought we’d bring you our very own formula for Eurovision success. Working with experts at the London College of Music, we distilled down the winning entries from the past 10 years to find out what made them a cut above the rest.

The key findings? Our study suggests that chorus is key, with winning songs usually focussed around a three note chorus. A sense of familiarity and plenty of cheeky charm always helps too. In short, if you’re looking to create a winner, you could do a lot worse than stick to the following formula:

(3 minutes long + 3 Note Chorus ) + Sounds Familiar + Cheeky Charm = Win

Or…

3m + 3NCh + SF + CC = W

And it turns out the UK’s entry for this year fares pretty well when stacked up against the formula!

“This year’s UK entry Molly does this brilliantly,” says Sam Sutton – Senior Lecturer at the London College of Music. “The vocal melody has that familiar quality and only requires one listen before it’s firmly rooted ‘on repeat’ in your brain. It is also three minutes long on the nose, which firmly puts her in the running.”

So, there’s the science behind it all – now it’s time for the tunes. We’ll see you at the party…

Introducing Joel Compass

Having cracked the Top 40 with the classy nu-soul vibes of his latest single Forgive Me, songwriter Joel Compass has quickly emerged as one of the most promising young talents of 2014.

With hefty support from both Radio 1 and 1Xtra as well as a raft of coverage in both the indie and mainstream press, Joel Compass represents a rare thing in music – an artist with real crossover potential.

We caught up with Joel recently to quiz him on how it’s all been going so far, and you can read his answers below. Be sure to listen in to our Joel Compass artist station below as well, to hear music from both Joel and similar artists.

Your tracks incorporate a wide range of sounds and influence. How would you categorise your own sound if you were describing it to someone who’d never heard your stuff before?

I’d tell them it had the atmospherics of Pink Floyd, the electronics of Aphex Twin, Lemon Jelly and Orbital and the RnB/Soul of Maxwell, Jamiroquai etc.

Many would say the market for singer-songwriters is incredibly crowded at the moment - what do you think is the key factor in standing out from the crowd?

I think it’s important not to think like that and to make sure you’re not watching what anyone else is doing too closely. I will always do what I naturally do. But I know what you mean - a lot of people that are advancing in this industry are just skilful in the art of duplication and others are visionaries. I like to consider myself one of the later.

Things feel like they’ve been happening for you very quickly since the start of the year with radio airplay and ‘ones to watch’ tips - do you find that exciting, or daunting?

Definitely exciting! But I have this mentality where I will tell myself that 1,000,000 views isn’t 40,000,000 and I hope my mindset never changes. I could easily get way too excited and complacent and just flop. When I met John Legend, I realised that it was possible to be famous and grounded at the same time.

What moment has stood out for you the most so far in your career? The moment when you felt ‘wow, this is really going somewhere now’

When I was first playlisted on Radio 1/1Xtra/Captial and Kiss. Everything started to feel that bit more real; that’s definitely been the most exciting part so far.

Are you looking forward to playing festivals later this year? What’s the trick to commanding the stage as a solo artist?

I can’t wait. Festivals to me are about feeling good and losing yourself - I need to do that on stage and I think that people will drop into that same place!

Nick Mulvey – Meet Me There

From Mercury-nominated member of Portico Quartet to solo singer-songwriter, Nick Mulvey’s career has seen more twists and turns than most. Informed by time spent studying at the School of Oriental and African Studies, his music brings a wide palate of influences to tenderly crafted acoustic melodies.

Arctic Monkeys – Snap Out Of It

As the fifth single to be taken from the band’s monumentally successful AM album, Snap Out of It sees the boys dipping into catchy 70s glam for a number that recalls Bowie at his Ziggy Stardust best. Cracking stuff.

Jake Bugg – Messed Up Kids

The Nottingham-born troubadour offers up another cut of heavily US-influenced tune-craft on Messed Up Kids. A tale of rabble-rousing youths; the cheery, upbeat chorus helps mark this out as one of the better moments on Bugg’s Shangri La album.

Next Big Thing - Tourist / Rough Fields / Khushi

Tourist

Looking to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Disclosure and Rudimental, Tourist – aka William Phillips - is the latest talented young British producer looking to offer up a cultured palate of slick beats and glossy synths. His collaboration with Lianne La Havas – Patterns – sounds like a proper breakthrough moment and has already been tipped by the likes of Annie Mac.

Rough Fields

From one electronic production maestro to another, James Birchall – working under the moniker Rough Fields – makes sleek, beautifully composed pieces that saw his album Edge of the Firelight win praise from the BBC and a round of funding from the PRS to help him take it on tour.

Khushi

Quickly racking up airplay from both Radio 1 and 6 Music, East Londoner Khushi makes melodic, chilled-out indie pop; strikingly delicate vocals swirling in and out amidst a rich mix of sonic textures.

Blondie: Hosted By

They’re arguably one of the most iconic bands to emerge from the New Wave scene of the late 70s and early 80s, and with a catalogue of hits including Hanging On The Telephone, Atomic and Rapture to call their own, it’s fair to say that Blondie know what they’re on about when it comes to great music.

Originally splitting up in 1982, the band reformed in 1997 to stage one of the most confident comebacks of all time when their single Maria shot to No. 1 in the UK.

Fastforward to 2014 and Blondie are still a creative force to be reckoned with, their tenth studio album Ghosts of Download hitting shelves this week. The record combines a concise Greatest Hits disc alongside thirteen brand new tracks, including a collaboration with the Gossip’s Beth Ditto and a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s 80s anthem Relax.

To get the low-down on the record, we caught up with none other than Debbie Harry and Chris Stein from the band as they took us through some of their favourite songs alongside key inspirations – all in our exclusive Hosted By station. Tune in below!

The sun seems to be finally poking its head out for more than a momentary visit, and the smell of BBQs striking up on every corner is in the air. Summer’s on the way, and with it, a raft of great new tracks to blast out. Check out some of our favourites from this week’s new releases – all in our Brand New & Brilliant station…

Clean Bandit – Extraordinary

The genre-bending chart-toppers return with another irresistible mix of current dance tropes thrown together with gorgeous classical string flourishes. With one hell of a chorus in tow, for our money this is one of the best pop singles of the year so far.

Coldplay – A Sky Full of Stars

Something of an odd-one-out moment on the new Coldplay album, this arms-aloft banger makes for a stark contrast to the largely down-tempo refrains of the rest of the record as the band team up with producer-of the-moment Avicii.

Sam Smith – Stay With Me

Looking highly likely to score Sam Smith his second solo number this weekend, this sprawling piece of elegant soul sees the singer-songwriter’s vocals front and centre against a minimalist piano backing as he turns balladeer.

Wolf Alice

These London-based Alt-Rockers have been plugging away for a while now, with their standout single Bros swiftly seeing them crowned as the most blogged about artist in the UK in 2013. Further tips from 6 Music and Huw Stephens as well as a support slot on tour alongside Peace have seen their dreamy, melodic guitar numbers continue to go from strength to strength.

Sasha Keable

image

If you’re in search of the next Katy B or Jessie Ware, look no further. BRIT-school grad Sasha Keable makes slickly-produced urban grooves topped off with a richly soulful voice. No surprises then that Disclosure got her to guest vocal on their track Voices. Now signed to Universal and working with the excellent Dev Hynes, expect great things from Sasha over the coming year.

All We Are

Liverpool trio All We Are formed at the city’s prestigious Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) and swiftly impress with disco-tinged tracks like Feel Safe. Imagine the Bee Gees transposed into the 21st century and strolling through a befuddled Saturday night in Hoxton and you won’t be far off.
